That’s it, we ate it! We had our first guinea pig (cuy) in Peru last week. Not to sound cliché or anything but it tastes just like chicken. Very rich dark chicken meat. Quite good, actually. The skin is very crispy and, for the record, it is not hairy.
What makes cuy a bit weird, however, is that it is served whole, with head, ears, nails and everything else on. We were sharing and I am keeping these little parts for next time but D did have the ear, a tiny, chewy bit which tasted like sow’s ear (although he’s never had sow’s ear).
Currently available in a peruvian grocery store near you.

My boyfriend had some in puno and found as well that it tasted like chicken. Ours looked even more like a flat guinea pig! lots of work for only little meat though!

The cuy I tried was served on a bed of fries like I was at Denny’s or something. Your plate looks a lot more gourmet. Delicious.
You guys are going to love, Machu Picchu by the way. That place is incredible. I’m happy you’re there!

Steve! Thanks for your comment, we did not know any of the Grafys were reading us! French fries do seem to be a recurring theme here… Macchu Pichu was great, we’ll try to tell you more about it soon.
